How to QA a Hong Kong Bilingual Website: 12 Translation and UX Checks + Free Bilingual Website QA Checklist (Word)
Bilingual QA is not a sentence-by-sentence comparison. The costly failures are often a button left in the other language, an untranslated form error, Chinese customer data corrupted downstream, or longer English copy clipped on mobile. Acceptance should prove that users can complete the same business task in either language.
Test the same task, not just the same words
List the journeys visitors must complete: find a service, compare options, submit an enquiry, download a file, book, pay, switch language and return to the same page. Run each journey in Traditional Chinese and English, preserving the final URL, screenshots, errors and notifications.
Five QA layers
QA area | What to inspect | Evidence | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
Language and brand | Terms, tone, terminology and company facts match | Side-by-side page captures | Content and brand |
Interface and journey | Buttons, forms, errors and success messages are complete | Recorded Chinese and English tasks | UX and QA |
Search setup | Separate URLs, titles, descriptions and hreflang | Source and index checks | SEO and development |
Mobile and accessibility | Clipping, wrapping, labels, keyboard and screen-reader cues | Multi-size test record | Design and development |
Maintenance | New content sync, versions, owners and deadlines | Bilingual update register | Content lead |
The 12 common failures
01|Mixed-language headings, navigation, buttons or footer.
02|Different translations for the same service across site, form, quote and email.
03|Literal English that changes the meaning or sounds unnaturally harsh.
04|Longer English text clipping buttons, cards, tables or mobile menus.
05|Required, format, loading, success and failure messages not localized.
06|Chinese input works in the form but breaks in CRM or notifications.
07|Phone, currency, address, date, unit or opening-hour formats ignore Hong Kong context.
08|Chinese and English pages point to different forms, offers or broken links.
09|The language switcher returns to home instead of the matching page.
10|Titles, descriptions, image alt text or structured data remain in the other language.
11|Hreflang, canonicals or sitemaps pair non-equivalent pages.
12|New content is updated in one language with no owner or synchronization deadline.
Search, usability and accessibility belong in the same test
Google recommends separate URLs for language versions and hreflang for equivalent localized pages. W3C guidance covers page language, labels, instructions and identifiable errors so assistive technologies and ordinary users understand what to enter. A technically valid form that explains its error in the wrong language is still a failed journey.
Worked acceptance example
An English visitor selects Request a Quote, lands on the English form, enters a Chinese company name and Hong Kong number, receives a specific English validation message for a bad email, then sees an English success state. Sales receives intact Chinese data in CRM. Repeat in Chinese; keep the recording and test enquiry ID.
Hong Kong planning budget and timeline
Plan HK$8,000–18,000 for language, interface, form and basic SEO QA across 10–25 pages; HK$18,000–45,000 for 26–80 pages with device coverage, CMS fields, analytics and repair verification; and HK$45,000–120,000+ for larger multilingual, commerce or integrated systems. Translation, rewriting, design and development fixes are separate. A small review may take 1–2 weeks; a broader programme 3–6 weeks. These are Allua planning ranges, not fixed quotations.

How to use it: record URL, language, device, observed result, evidence, owner and due date for every item. Frequently asked questions
Can machine translation go live directly? It can accelerate a first draft, but brand promises, terms, pricing, medical or financial content need suitable human review plus journey testing.
Must both versions be sentence-for-sentence identical? No. Facts, limitations, commercial purpose and CTA should align, while syntax, examples and tone can be naturally localized.
Can we test only priority pages? Start with revenue and risk, but do not hide forms, payments, login, errors or legal pages behind low traffic.
