How to Review an Animation Storyboard: 8 Checks Before Voice-over + Free Storyboard Approval Scorecard (Word)
A storyboard is not an art contest. It converts a script into decisions about time, composition, action, sound and transitions. “Looks good” is dangerous approval: once voice-over and animation begin, a story change can trigger re-recording, subtitle changes, lip-sync work and entire-shot rebuilds.
Separate three approval stages
The script approves message and wording. The static storyboard approves composition, action and transitions. The animatic adds scratch audio and timing so the team can judge pace. Adobe describes storyboard panels as sequential frames that may carry dialogue and action notes; an animatic makes timing more tangible.
Eight-point storyboard scorecard
Check | Two-point pass question | Zero-point blocker |
|---|---|---|
Message | One clear point and action? | Everything is equally important |
Story | Cause and turn connect? | Sudden transition or conclusion |
Timing | Voice and reading time fit? | More words than time |
Visual | Subject, action and camera clear? | Only says “matching visual” |
Brand | Assets and product state correct? | Old logo or wrong UI |
Captions | Safe area and sound-off meaning work? | Captions cover product |
Rights | Claims and assets supported? | Unsourced figure |
Versions | Ratios, languages and CTA explicit? | One undefined version only |
Point feedback to a frame
Use a frame or timecode, observation, reason and direction. Example: “Frame 12: the narration reaches feature three while the picture still shows packaging; reveal the function earlier or remove one feature.” Adobe's Frame.io guidance supports frame-specific comments and visual annotations. The point is shared reference, not a tool brand.
Lock the story before final voice-over
Scratch narration is useful for timing. Before final recording, lock the core message, scene order, narration length, pronunciation, languages and CTA. Mark what the animator may interpret freely and what is a regulated claim, product fact or non-negotiable brand rule.
Captions and sound-off viewing belong in the storyboard
W3C says captions include dialogue and important non-speech information. Reserve safe areas so captions do not cover products, prices, expressions or CTAs. Test the longer language first. If a scene makes sense only through narration, add a visual cue.
Hong Kong planning budget and timeline
A 60–90 second 2D animation using simple graphics and supplied brand assets may be planned at HK$25,000–80,000. Original characters, many scenes, 3D, complex data, bilingual voice-over and multiple ratios may start around HK$70,000–180,000+. Allow four to ten weeks with approval gates for script, storyboard/animatic, style frame, first animation and final delivery. These are Allua planning ranges, not fixed quotes.

Score 0 for missing or blocking, 1 for workable but incomplete, and 2 for ready. A zero in Claims and rights or Voice and timing blocks final voice-over. Scores of 13–16 may advance to animatic, 9–12 need targeted revision, and 0–8 return to script. Example: message 2, story 1 and timing 0 still stops recording even if the total reaches 13.
01 | Core message: can a viewer state the point in one sentence?
02 | Story logic: do problem, choice, turn and outcome connect?
03 | Voice and timing: do words, pauses and reading time fit?
04 | Visual action: does each panel define subject, action, camera and transition?
05 | Brand and product: are logo, colour, scale, UI and restrictions correct?
06 | Captions and access: safe area, bilingual length, sound-off meaning and key sounds?
07 | Claims and rights: are figures, comparisons, cases, music and assets cleared?
08 | Versions and CTA: are ratios, duration, language, ending and next step explicit?
Frequently asked questions
Must a storyboard be polished before approval?
No. Low-fidelity panels are cheaper to change, but subject, product, direction, key text and transitions must be unambiguous. Approve visual style separately with a style frame.
Who approves it?
One brand decision-maker consolidates feedback; product verifies facts; legal reviews its scope; production explains timing and cost. Ten people editing one line in separate channels is not governance.
Can a storyboard change after approval?
Yes, with impact stated. A colour change, text change, voice re-record, shot rebuild and story change are different change classes. Log the change, reason, cost, timing and approver.
