Xiaohongshu Cover Size and Design: 6 Brand Layouts and a Crop/Text Checklist + Free Xiaohongshu Cover Layouts and QA Checklist (Word)
A Xiaohongshu cover first appears as a small card in a two-column feed. The common failure is not a lack of beauty; it is recycling a YouTube landscape, Instagram square or dense ad poster. The subject shrinks, copy multiplies, the product crops and every post looks the same.
Use 3:4 portrait as a practical master ratio, commonly 1080×1440, then preview in the live app, search, profile and relevant devices because entry points, overlays and crops can change. Dimensions are the container. The click decision comes from a clear promise, credible visual, recognisable brand and accurate match with the note.
Give each cover one job
A cover should ask one question, show one result, explain one difference, offer one step or establish one situation. Do not place the brand story, five benefits, an offer, address, phone and disclaimer on the same first image. Move detail to later cards and the caption.
Six brand layouts
Layout | Best for | Cover structure | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
Single product | Launch, hero item, packaging | Large subject + one question | Busy background |
Choice comparison | Plans, variants, branches | 2–3 options + one dimension | Inconsistent comparison criteria |
Step-by-step | How-to, recipe, demo | Result + steps 1–3 | Full tutorial on first image |
Checklist / diagnosis | Checks, errors, preparation | Tick or gap + item count | Fear-based headline |
Situation story | Lifestyle, service, experience | Person or scene + need | Vague brand slogan |
Before / after | Makeover, repair, results | Same angle + conditions | Exaggeration or different scale |
These are six search intents, not six decorations. Product answers “what is it?” Comparison answers “which?” Tutorial answers “how?” Checklist answers “what is missing?” Story answers “why does this matter to me?” Before-after answers “what changed?” Standardise two or three master layouts instead of designing from zero.
Make copy readable in a thumbnail
Use one headline, preferably one or two lines. Put the core term first and delete empty phrases. Maintain high contrast and avoid thin type over food, faces or patterns. Use a restrained translucent panel if needed; shadows cannot rescue a chaotic background. In mixed English-Chinese work, choose a primary language and stop the secondary language from competing at the same hierarchy.
Brand recognition is more than a large logo
Recognition comes from stable type, colour, spacing, photography, iconography and voice. A logo may be small and clear. When it is larger than the topic, the cover feels like an outdoor ad rather than useful content. Packaging, store, staff or real usage can identify a brand more naturally.
Match the promise in the note
If the cover says five options, provide five. If it promises a budget, show the range, inclusions and limits. If it says tested, state sample, method, date and result. Do not use false countdowns, exaggerated comparisons or invented testing. A mismatched click weakens interaction and trust.
Test one main variable at a time
Change the promise, hero visual, colour or layout—not all four. Keep topic, posting time, account and media conditions as comparable as practical. Track impressions, opens/reads, saves, comments and qualified enquiries. A before-after comparison is not a randomised A/B test; with small samples, treat it as direction, not law.
Hong Kong planning budget and timeline
Six master covers, type/colour rules and two revision rounds may start around HK$6,000–18,000 over one to three weeks. Thirty topics, product photography, Chinese/English adaptations, schedule and data review may start around HK$20,000–60,000+ over three to six weeks. Account operation, creators, filming, illustration, media and rights are separate. These are Allua planning ranges, not fixed quotations.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1080×1440 always safe?
No. It is a practical 3:4 working canvas, not an eternal official guarantee. Preview through the actual publishing surface and devices.
Should the price appear on the cover?
Yes when price is the main search question and remains accurate. State currency, conditions and validity. Frequently changing prices may belong in the note or an update.
Does every post need a different design?
No. Standardise two or three layouts, then vary hero image and headline by content purpose. This is often more recognisable than reinventing every cover.
