Does Influencer Gifting Guarantee a Post? A Brand Checklist + Free Influencer Gifting Checklist (Word)
No. Without agreed deliverables, a gift should be treated as a gift, trial or invitation—not an implied obligation to reply, post or give a positive opinion. If publication is required, propose clear paid or conditional terms.
Separate four collaboration models
Model | Brand may expect | Creator may choose | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
No-obligation gift | Delivery confirmation | Not to post | Relationship building |
Conditional exchange | Agreed deliverable | Accept or decline | Small defined scope |
Paid collaboration | Contracted delivery | Honest opinion | Guaranteed posting |
Loan sample | Return under terms | Trial within conditions | High-value sample |
Why gifting creates conflict
Brands may assume a valuable product deserves a post; creators may see an unsolicited PR sample. The dispute is usually about unclear obligation, timing, control and disclosure.
Give the creator a genuine choice
Ask whether the creator is interested before requesting an address. State “no posting obligation” or list the actual deliverables. Do not disguise an exchange as a casual gift. Collect address data only for shipment and retain it only as needed.
If a post is required, agree before shipping
Use a one-page term sheet for platform, format, period, genuine trial, right not to recommend, disclosure, revisions, reuse, paid media, reporting and payment. The brand can correct facts and compliance, not buy a predetermined positive conclusion.
Keep follow-up restrained
Confirm delivery, then ask once after a reasonable trial. One final close-out message is enough. A no-obligation gift does not justify daily reminders or public pressure.
Disclosure and truthful advertising
Free product can be a material relationship. For content affecting US audiences, FTC guidance explicitly includes free or discounted products in disclosure expectations. Hong Kong brands should also avoid false or misleading marketing and obtain advice for each target market.
When to move to paid collaboration
Use content fit, reliability, genuine interest, audience and trackable results—not the number of free posts. If organic work fits, negotiate a new brief, fair fee and rights rather than asking for free expansion.
Hong Kong planning budget and timing
For a 10–30 creator gifting programme, shortlist, outreach, logistics and basic reporting may start around HK$8,000–30,000, excluding product and shipping. Guaranteed paid posts, production and rights can take a full campaign to HK$30,000–150,000+ over four to eight weeks. These are Allua planning ranges, not creator quotes.

01 | Define the purpose
Relationship building, product feedback, optional mention or guaranteed deliverable?
02 | Verify identity
Confirm the creator's own profile, cross-platform links and content.
03 | Check fit
Review category, market, audience, values and recent partnerships.
04 | Invite first
Explain the brand, product, reason for fit and whether posting is optional.
05 | Collect address after consent
Request only shipment data and state purpose and access.
06 | Record the shipment
Product, quantity, value, batch, sensitive ingredients, instructions and tracking.
07 | Allow a realistic trial
Do not push a conclusion before the product can be used properly.
08 | Give disclosure guidance
Ask for clear gifted or sponsored disclosure under the platform and market rules.
09 | Control factual claims
Provide substantiated facts and prohibited claims, not a fabricated experience.
10 | Limit follow-up to two touches
One delivery/trial check and one close-out message; no pressure for optional gifting.
11 | Record the result
Separate no reply, declined, received-no-post, organic mention and paid conversion.
12 | Decide the next step
Use fit, reliability and business result—not the idea that a post is owed.
Invitation example
“Hi, we’re ___. We noticed your recent content about ___. We would like to send ___ for you to try, with no posting obligation. If you are interested, please confirm first and we will request shipping details. If you prefer paid collaborations, feel free to share your media kit and quotation.”
Frequently asked questions
Can the brand ask for the product back?
Only where loan, sample or return conditions were clear before shipment. A normal no-obligation gift should not be reclassified afterwards.
What if the creator posts a negative opinion?
Check factual, safety and compliance issues, respond professionally and address genuine defects. A non-positive opinion is not automatically a breach.
Does every gift need a contract?
Clear written outreach and records may suffice for no-obligation gifting. Use formal terms when deliverables, fees, rights, paid media or exclusivity apply.
How many creators should receive gifts?
Base it on objective, fit, product cost and follow-up capacity. A smaller high-fit list is usually easier to manage than blind mass seeding.
